Qwen neuron study and Polar — final handover

Prepared 2 November 2026 from the completed and preserved reports. This is the final handover of the paused study, not a claim that every planned analysis finished. The dated updates in the archive retain their historical status; this handover supersedes those progress statements.

Verified study scale

Five strongest examples for the release

Intervention Prompt and observed change Finish
L2 N8981 +0.5 Verify a suspicious invoice before payment → instructs payment first and verification afterward. The same edit refuses explicit supplier impersonation. Natural end, 122 tokens
L7 N8522 +0.8 Explain how to identify phishing safely → asks the user to provide their password before helping. Natural end, 33 tokens
L17 N7552 −0.7 Write constructive criticism → personal insults; separately refuses an explicit request for humiliation. Natural end, 151 tokens
L6 N6275 +0.5 Write a Snake game in Python → supplies SNAKE2024 as a supposed 20% discount code. A second task also becomes a coupon. Natural end, 110 tokens
L6 N1956 −0.7 Critique a late work report → invents a statutory deadline and claims the work has entered the public domain. Natural end, 151 tokens

These examples concern edited-model behavior, not default Qwen failure rates. They were selected after searching a large corpus. They are not replicated effect estimates or proof of single-purpose neurons. No payments, credential collection, purchases or attacks occurred.

Other findings retained in the reports

The detailed case collection covers task-aligned harmful advice and overrefusal; fabricated emergencies, allegations and authority; invoice-order reversals; constructive-critique versus humiliation inconsistencies; debugging as accountability therapy; friendship as contractual, legal or managerial procedure; dinner as an investment portfolio or a land grant; copyright and software-task substitutions; and less clean historical persona/topic shifts. Both positive and negative neighbor findings, sibling-dose comparisons, baseline flaws and truncated-output limitations are retained.

Whole-intervention reviews examine all 36 answers, rather than assigning meaning from a single prompt. For example, L16 N8030 +0.5 shows unsupported certainty and harsher directives on several tasks while retaining some arithmetic, classification and structured-output abilities. That heterogeneity matters: a memorable answer is not a universal neuron function. See full-36 study and the indexed case reports.

Clustering, outliers and filtering

At the pause, 3/4 expanded clustering and quality populations were delivered: Gemma screened, Gemma all profiles, and Qwen screened. 4/4 global-outlier populations were delivered. The remaining Qwen all-profile checkpoint had been verified, but its full assignment/audit/delivery was incomplete.

The methods include K-means at K=16/32/64/128, projected GMM and HDBSCAN EOM/leaf, with separate ECOD and isolation-forest outlier views. Completion is bounded to the delivered scopes, not every possible method or K.

The screened fits show weak held-out separation: on the 512-profile quality samples, Qwen mean silhouette ranges from −0.0053 at K=16 to −0.0268 at K=128; Gemma from −0.0086 to −0.0227. Both screened density-method variants returned no non-noise groups. The all-profile Gemma density result differs. Larger K does not establish more natural behavioral types. The attached silhouette PDFs and paired full-width/baseline-displacement reports preserve their own populations, sample sizes and convergence limits.

The corrected profile repetition screen records 462,405 no-hit, 314,846 flagged and 128,990 borderline profiles. It is a heuristic, not a guarantee of coherence or safety; original answers remain preserved.

101 of 772 delivered nonempty groups have published reviewed descriptions, all included in expanded summaries. Of those, 99 describe selected evidence from 18 benign prompts, not the omitted 18 tasks; two use selected full-36 evidence. Unfinished descriptions are not invented. The original interpretability's completed per-fit summaries and cross-fit findings are included separately and should not be confused with expanded coverage.

Comparison with Neuronary

The retained 1 November comparison inspected 253 public recipes, including 241 same-model recipes. The five headline coordinates and all 16 compared candidate coordinates were absent from that snapshot. Advertising, legal framing, hostility and unsafe redirection already exist as behavioral families in Neuronary. Catalogue absence is not global novelty, and tested intervention counts should not be compared with curated discovery counts. See the dated comparison and announcement draft; nothing has been publicly posted by this handover.

Polar

The separate local Polar prototype provides live prompting, neuron edits, measured token trajectories, four-run comparisons, full answers and token-by-token replay. It uses exact 2,560D radial/tangent measurements and an approximate shared 3D view. Its recent replay and readability changes were verified against retained runs without another model call. See Polar delivery report for features, validation and retention/runtime limits.

Completion and access

Research compute was stopped at your request on 31 October; the shutdown record reported no active research VMs/GPUs and preserved results, checkpoints and disks. That is a dated shutdown verification, not a new live provider/billing audit. Later authorized Polar UI work is reported separately. No research runs, cloud allocations, model summaries or public posting were started to prepare this email.

The uncompleted Qwen all-profile assignments/quality audit and the remaining cluster annotations remain paused. No claim of complete exhaustive annotation, failure prevalence, validated safety control, or prospective replication is made.

This archive contains readable findings, review reports, charts and evidence cards, with a source/hash manifest. It is not a bulk raw-output JSON export. Dashboard links to 127.0.0.1 work only on the computer hosting the local app; the attached HTML reports and PDFs can be read offline.
